PERSONAL PROJECTS
My personal work shows a fascination with atypical use of materials, the use of everyday objects for haphazard but undeniably useful purposes, the creation of out-of-place but alluring atmospheres. These projects serve to inspire further work and concepts than can be applied to design and architecture.
WAVES OF CONTEMPLATION
Independent project. A composition exploring the use of standard objects in atypical application or setting, such as the “movable living room,” shown here. This expresses my pervading interest in continually reconsidering the use of standard materials and objects in innovative ways, leading to refreshing art or architecture.
FACEBOX
Independent project. Pastel on pastel card affixed to wood; 7.5”x7.5”x8”; Plays with the concept of “impossible expressions,” made by combining facial arrangements in unnatural ways, which people cannot physically make, but somehow make sense and communicate emotion. Resulted in rotating wood box that generates 16 different combinations of expressions.
TO BETTER DAYS
Gum wrappers on canvas panel, 18” x 24”; The piece contemplates the degradation of the environment and wasting of materials– even gum wrappers accumulate to an astonishing mass when collected. Thus, the entire piece is composed of laminated gum wrappers, wire, and bottle caps. If fairies existed, what would life be like for them in this age of industry and deforestation? Perhaps confined to a run-down home of zinc walls, contemplating the lush forests of the past.
