PARK (ING) DAY
September 2015 & 2016
Park(ing) day is an international annual event, started by Rebar. People transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks. The movement brings something unexpected to the city for a day, questioning the limits and conventions of public space. See Rebar’s website here.
On the board for our CMU AIAS chapter, I created and headed up a committee to participate in the event. We gathered a group of students, decided on our design ideas, commissioned materials we could re-use, gathered fallen branches from Schenley park, pre-constructed elements of our structure, all in a rushed time span. The project was an interesting challenge in leadership, organization, budgeting, construction, and navigating the Pittsburgh Parking Authority.
The first year, we constructed a shady structure under which students and passersby could socialize or pause in their day. To engage visitors, we placed a little library within the slats of a shipping palette, set up a giant-bubble-blowing station. The second year, we made a musical-themed spot, with a STOMP-like music wall, giant rubber-band harp, and chime wall.
